Soon after blind Tiresias could see into the future,
A swarthy nymph put his gift to the test.
With a river god, she popped out a son whose perfect beauty broke hearts
Whom Tiresias said would live long unless he knew himself best
(Whatever that meant, his name was Narcissus)
At sixteen, a slender boy man, Narcissus had many wannabe groupies
Who wouldn’t touch him because his beauty was glassy and proud
But when Echo saw him, her breath caught in her throat
She fell in love instantly, she was wowed.
Echo had crazy burning hots for the slender boy man;
She burst to tell all her feelings quick and fast
But because Juno gave her a terrible curse
Echo could only speak words she heard last
Back and forth, the nymph and slender boy man shouted
“You come to me,” “Come to me” “Stay there” “Stay there”
But when they finally did meet, Narcissus said, “Don’t touch me”
Leaving Echo weeping “touch me, touch me” weeping to death.
She melted away, heartbroken
Her beauty fell away and her body turned to stone
Her voice remained, a sad reminder to all other rejectees
Who prayed for Narcissus to suffer likewise, in love but alone
He came to a pool of water, perfect and pristine
Drinking it up, he drank in desire and love through his eyes
Drinking in his reflection, infatuated by himself
He grabbed vainly at the picture, heading his demise
Knowing himself, knowing his love to be in vain
The slender boy man wept and whined
He knew it was hopeless, impossible to attain
He was consumed by love, just like Echo
And died mournfully, Echo singing his refrain
All that’s left of the slender boy man
Lives in a flower, a sunny face
Surrounded by white ruffles
To sing praises to old Tiresias
Who is never wrong
